Dave Axland and Dan Proctor opened Wild Horse Golf Club in 1999 in Gothenburg, Nebraska, on sand dunes overlooking the Platte River Valley. The course is widely dubbed 'the Poor Man's Sandhills' โ a $ public-fee tribute to the world-famous private Sand Hills Golf Club a few hours north, with the same prairie-meets-sandhills design language at a fraction of the access barrier. Golf Digest ranked Wild Horse #69 on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses in 2019, and the course was included in the 2006 U.S. Top 100. Golf Magazine has it on Top 100 Courses You Can Play for 2024-25. Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, and Golfweek all rate Wild Horse among their prestigious lists. Daily-fee public pricing in the $ band keeps it among the best per-dollar plays in American golf. For Nebraska or Great Plains golf trips, this is the destination round.
