Mike DeVries, Tom Doak's most accomplished apprentice, designed Greywalls in 2005 on a rugged Lake Superior bluff in Marquette, in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The site is genuinely unique for American golf: granite outcrops, dramatic elevation changes, and one of the few links-tinged routings on the Great Lakes shore. The course opened to a standing ovation and immediately landed on every major Top Ten Best New listings. Golf Digest currently ranks Greywalls 59th on its America's 100 Greatest Public list (up eight spots from the previous cycle) and 8th in Michigan for 2025-26. Golf Magazine has had it at #80 on Top 100 Courses You Can Play and Golfweek had it #81 on its Best Modern Courses. For a destination this remote, Marquette is a 7-hour drive from Detroit, harder to reach than most Bandon connections, the rankings reflect just how strong the course is. Affordable rates ($) match the muni roots of the host club.
