About Timber Point Country Club

Timber Point on Great River, Long Island is the rare Suffolk County muni with genuine Golden Age pedigree: originally chartered in 1925 as the Timber Point Club, its 18-hole course was designed by the architectural team of Harry Colt and C. Hugh Alison, the same firm behind Muirfield Village's consulting work and Kawana Fuji in Japan, and one of the most influential pre-Depression partnerships in global course design. Devereux Emmet is also frequently credited on the routing. Spain's first professional golfer, Angel de la Torre, took the head pro position in 1925 on Alison's recommendation. The original 6,825-yard par-71 layout was famous for terrain-oriented variety. The inward half included the boldest holes: the 460-yard par-4 11th with three distinct driving areas, the 470-yard par-4 14th, and the 205-yard into-the-wind 15th, modeled after Alister MacKenzie's famous Gibraltar hole at Moortown in England. Holes 16 and 17 were true seaside holes, and the 510-yard 18th, routed with the prevailing breeze, closed the round with an aggressive-player bailout. Suffolk County expanded Timber Point to 27 holes (Red / White / Blue configuration) and it now plays as a public county muni, a remarkable preservation of Colt & Alison architecture in the NYC metro's muni rotation.
