Gary Roger Baird's 1986 General's Retreat, Hermitage Golf Course's original 18 holes (the President's Reserve came later in 2000) along the banks of the Cumberland River in Old Hickory. Hosted the LPGA Sara Lee Classic every year from 1988 through 1999, 12 consecutive years on the LPGA calendar gave the course a credibility seam most munis never develop. The 6,773-yard par-72 routing runs through mature Tennessee hardwoods with the Cumberland shaping several holes. Four strong par-5s anchor the round; three of them (#8, #11, #16) feature risk-reward water with reachable-in-two options for long hitters. Six tee boxes give the course real flexibility, playable for beginners from the forwards, a championship test from the tips. Voted Best Golf Course in Nashville. The more accessible of Hermitage's two layouts and often the better warm-up round, pair with President's Reserve for 36 at the state's most decorated public facility.
