Perry Maxwell โ the architect behind Tulsa's Southern Hills (host of multiple U.S. Opens) โ designed the Dogwood Course at Lakewood in 1947, debuting Alabama's first professional course. The routing meanders through dogwoods, magnolias, and ancient oaks across the Grand Hotel grounds in Point Clear. Joe Lee later renovated the layout, and the course was completely renovated again in 2018. The Dogwood is part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail (the resort-tier section), and has hosted the U.S. Senior Women's Amateur three times โ 1974, 1986, and 2021 โ a continuous championship-host record stretching nearly 50 years. As an Alabama destination round, it sits alongside Kiva Dunes and Peninsula as one of three serious Gulf-area public options. Resort-tier pricing in the $$ band; the Grand Hotel infrastructure adds Marriott Autograph Collection amenities.
