Homer Flint, Raymond Cain, and Robin Nelson designed the North Course at Mauna Lani, opening in 1991 โ a decade after the South Course on the same Big Island Kohala property. The North uses rolling fairways through kiawe forests rather than the South's lava-bed terrain. A 230-acre protected archeological district lies on the course's northern edge, and feral goats roam several holes. The signature 17th par 3 sits at the base of a lava bowl with elevated tees forming a natural amphitheater. GolfPass Golfers' Choice 2025 has the North Course #11 in Hawaii (alongside its sister South Course at #1). Golfweek currently ranks it #7 in Hawaii on Best Courses You Can Play. Both Mauna Lani courses have received Golf Magazine's Gold Medal Award every year for seven consecutive years. Premium-resort pricing in the $$$ band, slightly below the South's marquee rate. For Big Island groups, the natural pairing is to play both Mauna Lani courses on the same trip.
