Homer Flint and Raymond Cain (with Robin Nelson contributing) opened the South Course at Mauna Lani in 1981, built across the 16th-century Kaniku lava flow on the Big Island's Kohala Coast. A pair of par 3s, the 7th and 15th, are the most photographed holes on the course and among the most photographed in the world: oceanside par 3s on black-lava terrain. GolfPass Golfers' Choice 2025 named Mauna Lani South the #1 golf course in Hawaii (and #1 in the U.S. by GolfPass users). The North Course on the same property took #2 in Hawaii. Mauna Lani has received Golf Magazine's Gold Medal Award every year since 1988, and the South Course was home to the Senior Skins Game from 1990 to 2000.
