Mississippi State University Golf Course in Starkville is the home course of the MSU Bulldogs men's and women's golf programs and one of the SEC's best university-owned public tracks, a Brian Ault design that opened in 1986 and has earned Golfweek's Top 30 University-Owned Courses ranking nationally. The course routes through the pine forests and rolling Mississippi hill-country terrain on the southwest edge of campus, with mature hardwoods lining fairways and genuine elevation changes that make it play harder than the yardage suggests. The course's most-told story involves John Daly, as an Arkansas Razorback, Daly reached the par-5 18th green in two shots during an SEC Championship round, which became a local legend about the sheer length Daly possessed as a college golfer (this is the same Daly era that preceded his 1991 PGA Championship win). The MSU course regularly hosts SEC and conference tournaments, which means the conditioning and tournament-setup routines are maintained at a higher bar than a typical 1986 university course.
