About Mount Mitchell Golf Club

Mount Mitchell Golf Club in Burnsville is the only U.S. course designed by English architect Fred Hawtree, an architectural pedigree that immediately distinguishes it from every other public course in North Carolina. Hawtree is the British designer behind Royal Birkdale and multiple other Open Championship rota courses; that he chose a single American project in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it ended up being Mount Mitchell, is one of the lovelier accidents of modern American golf-travel architecture. Opened in 1975 and still under the same family ownership, the virtually-flat par-72 course sits at 6,495 yards nestled into the curves of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a surprisingly gentle layout for mountain-country golf, with no blind shots and a player-friendly playability that keeps mid-handicappers engaged. Golf Digest's 'Places to Play' has awarded Mount Mitchell 4.5 stars; Golfweek Magazine ranked it #11 'Best in State' for North Carolina in 2016. For the Asheville Mountains trip visitor, Mount Mitchell is the scenic-drive commitment worth making, one hour north of Asheville through some of the prettiest terrain in the American Southeast, landing at a course with international architectural pedigree.
