Presidio Golf Course, built in 1895, one of the oldest golf courses on the West Coast. Robert Wood Johnstone originally laid out the routing; Johnstone + William McEwan expanded it in 1910; the British firm of Herbert Fowler and Tom Simpson redesigned and lengthened the course in 1921, Fowler and Simpson's work arguably left the greatest impact. Closed to private members for 100 years, opened to public play in 1995 and quickly named one of the nation's top public courses. The 6,481-yard par-72 routing plays through The City's trademark hills, framed by mature eucalyptus and Monterey pine. Elevation changes, especially uphill, make holes play longer than their yardages, a signature complaint/compliment from visitors. The Presidio ecosystem (Presidio national park) keeps the course green year-round and free of the housing/development that mars most city-center golf. Consistently among the top public courses in the Bay Area and a close rival to TPC Harding Park. Pair with Sharp Park (MacKenzie 1931) for a Golden Age-Classical two-course San Francisco weekend.
Presidio Golf Course's peak-season green fee is around $127 per round. Off-peak rates vary by season. Call the pro shop for current shoulder pricing. Cart, range balls, and caddie fees are typically separate. Estimate the full San Francisco Bay Area trip cost
