George Cobb's 1967 Santee Cooper Country Club, the classic Cobb parkland layout on Lake Marion. Cobb is the architect behind Augusta National's Par-3 Course and Quail Hollow's original routing, which gives this South Carolina daily-fee a pedigree rare for a $50-tier muni-priced round. The routing winds through a series of scenic dogleg holes, 14 of the 18 green complexes are positioned higher than the approaches into them, an unusual proportion that Cobb used to elevate the difficulty without making the course longer. Strategic bunkering, several excellent par-3s (considered among the best in the region), and Miniverde Bermuda greens over 419 Bermuda fairways keep the conditioning sharp. The best closing hole in Santee, the par-4 18th offers a panoramic view of Lake Marion from its elevated green, one of the more memorable finishes in SC Lowcountry public golf.
