Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s 1969 Stonemont, the tougher of Stone Mountain Golf Club's two 18-hole layouts, carved through the Georgia pines at the foot of Stone Mountain. Classic Jones challenge work: narrow canting fairways, strategically placed bunkers, pinching bunkers fronting green sites, and demanding strategic choices off every tee. Stonemont opens with what many Atlanta-area golfers call the most difficult opening hole in the city, a brute of a par-5 that announces the rest of the round's demands. The 11th features a fronting creek, a steep rock wall, and is one of the card's memorable shots; the 12th has sentinel trees dead-center of the fairway. 6,863 yards par 70, 73.7 rating, 132 slope, genuinely tough from the tips. Host of numerous national professional and Georgia amateur championships. A must-play for Atlanta-area RTJ Sr. hunters and the more challenging of the two Stone Mountain rounds (pair with Lakemont for 36).
