The Course at Sewanee (University of the South) opened in 1915 on the campus of the University of the South in the Cumberland Plateau. A group of Sewanee graduates raised $3.5 million and hired Gil Hanse, Golf Magazine's 2009 Architect of the Year, to completely redesign the layout in a two-year project. Hanse built nine new green complexes, rebunkered the course, and removed trees while preserving the original routing from 1915. The restoration won Golf Magazine's Nine-Hole U.S. Renovation of the Year in 2013. Golf Digest includes it among "The 25 Greatest College Golf Courses in America," and Golf Magazine placed it on its 50 Best Nine-Hole Courses in the World. A rare example of a pre-1920 Southern campus course revived to modern architectural standards.
