Fort Ord expanded its golf program ten years after Bayonet opened by commissioning Gene Bates and Bob Baldock to build Black Horse in 1964, a second 18-hole championship layout on the same military base, named for the 11th Cavalry 'Black Horse' Regiment stationed across the bay at the Presidio of Monterey from 1919 to 1940. 7,024 yards par-72, with sweeping vistas of the Pacific visible from the higher holes and fescue-framed fairways that kick the ball into running pot bunkers with distinctive serrated edges. Fairways are slightly wider than Bayonet's and the bunkering is a shade less penal, but the greens are more difficult, slickly contoured and tilted to force precise approach shapes. Hosted Palmer, Nicklaus, Watson, and several US Presidents during the Army-run era. Peak fee runs around $150-175; active-duty military pay $22.30 plus cart. The 'easier sister' pairing with Bayonet for a two-card Monterey trip that skips the Pebble premium.
Bayonet & Black Horse - Black Horse Course's peak-season green fee is around $195 per round. Off-peak rates vary by season. Call the pro shop for current shoulder pricing. Cart, range balls, and caddie fees are typically separate. Estimate the full Pebble Beach trip cost
