Baxter Spann's 2003 Black Mesa, a high-desert links-style layout on the Santa Clara Pueblo thirty minutes north of Santa Fe. Routed around and over sandstone foothills that give the course its name, Black Mesa is regularly called one of the most spectacular public courses in the country. Spann bucked architectural convention here; the result is, per one reviewer, 'the only course where any one of the 18 holes can be considered the signature hole.' 7,307 yards par 72 with a 73.9 rating and 141 slope, genuinely tough, particularly from the back tees. The 16th is the nominal signature par-5 (536 yards), but holes like the 1st (narrow canyon-wash drive), the 7th (green set into a boulder formation), and the 13th (infinity-green approach) could each qualify. Loose regard for formulaic design produces random excitement throughout the routing. #85 Golf Digest America's 100 Greatest Public (2025-26). #3 Best in State New Mexico. Named one of the 'Ten Most Spectacular Courses in the World' by Links Magazine. A bucket-list New Mexico round, pair with Paa-Ko Ridge (Santa Fe-Albuquerque area) for the strongest public 36 in the Southwest.
Black Mesa Golf Club's peak-season green fee is around $109 per round. Off-peak rates vary by season. Call the pro shop for current shoulder pricing. Cart, range balls, and caddie fees are typically separate. Estimate the full Santa Fe trip cost
