Tom Doak designed The Loop at Forest Dunes in 2016, the first modern reversible golf course in American golf. Thirty-six holes of routing share eighteen greens, with the direction of play reversing daily: Black Course on odd-numbered dates, Red Course on even-numbered dates. Golfers who stay for two rounds play what is effectively two completely different courses on the same ground. Both Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine named The Loop their 2016 Best New Public Course, an award Doak won as a single submission for the combined 36 holes. Current rankings: Golf Magazine #30 on Best You Can Play; Golfweek #47 on Best Courses You Can Play and #3 on Best in State (Michigan); #35 on Best Resort Courses, #134 on Best Modern Courses. An architectural novelty with real merit, a must for design-curious golfers passing through northern Michigan.
