Hershey Country Club - West Course

Hershey Country Club's West Course is Maurice McCarthy's 1930 design, the original championship layout at the Hershey resort and a classic example of American parkland architecture from the pre-war era. The 6,860-yard par-73 routing plays through mature Pennsylvania hardwoods with the landmark Hershey landscape (including views of High Point Mansion, Milton S. Hershey's former home) framing several holes. The signature hole is the par-3 5th, a short iron over a low valley with High Point Mansion positioned as the backdrop, widely cited as one of the most photogenic par-3s in Pennsylvania. McCarthy worked in the same era as Donald Ross and Perry Maxwell, and his routing on the West shares the period's priorities: fairways that use natural grade, green complexes defended by slope rather than length, and bunker placement that rewards thinking. The West is rich with championship history. It hosted the 1940 PGA Championship, Byron Nelson beat Sam Snead 1 up in a match-play final that remains one of the signature moments in PGA history. Also host of the LPGA Lady Keystone Open (1978-1994), the Pennsylvania Open (multiple years), the USGA Senior Women's Amateur (2012), and the PGA Professional Championship (2011).
