Donald Ross opened Pinehurst No. 2 in 1907 and later called it "the fairest test of championship golf I have ever designed." The course is Ross's masterpiece โ crowned greens that reject anything less than a precise approach, natural sand scrub and wiregrass reclaimed in the Coore/Crenshaw restoration (2010-2011) replacing what had been manicured rough, and wide fairways that reward the player who thinks about angles into those famous turtleback greens. No single American course has hosted more single-event championships. Pinehurst No. 2 staged the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Opens, delivered the unprecedented back-to-back U.S. Open / U.S. Women's Open in 2014, and hosted the 2024 U.S. Open. The USGA has already awarded Pinehurst No. 2 four more U.S. Opens โ 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047 โ making it the anchor site for the championship. It's consistently ranked as one of the top public-access courses in America. Golf Digest places it 6th on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26) and 32nd overall on its 100 Greatest list. GOLF Magazine includes it on the Top 100 Courses in the World.
