Donald Ross first routed Pinehurst No. 4 in 1919, but it went through multiple reinventions before Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner undertook a full-scale blow-up-and-rebuild in 2018. The redesign retained much of the original routing while returning the course to Pinehurst's signature sand-and-pine character, with green complexes and bunkering that draw from Sandhills tradition without copying No. 2. The result has been one of the best-received public-access redesigns of the last decade. GOLF Magazine ranks it 26th on its Top 100 Courses You Can Play; Golfweek places it 38th on the same list. Golf Digest slots it at 32nd on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025-26), a peak of 28th in 2023-24, and 9th in North Carolina. The course was also featured on Golf Digest's 2019 Best New Courses lists (both Private and Public), reflecting how thoroughly the Hanse team treated this as a new course rather than a restoration.
Pinehurst No. 4's peak-season green fee is around $325 per round. Off-peak rates vary by season. Call the pro shop for current shoulder pricing. Cart, range balls, and caddie fees are typically separate. Estimate the full Pinehurst trip cost
