About Streamsong Black

Streamsong Black opened in 2017 as the resort's third flagship course, designed by Gil Hanse (architect of the 2016 Olympic Golf Course in Rio) and his partner Jim Wagner. Unlike Blue and Red, whose routings interlock across the same stretch of central Florida phosphate mine, Black stands on its own sprawl of reclaimed land, wider sightlines, more acreage to breathe, and a visibly different bunker style (sharper, revetted, more British in execution than the softer Coore/Doak work next door). Hanse and Wagner leaned into scale. Fairways are generous, but green complexes average over 11,000 square feet and dictate every approach, miss in the wrong quadrant and you're facing a 90-footer with break in every direction. The ninth is the hole everyone remembers: an old windmill behind the green gives the blind approach a directional frame, and the punchbowl sits 8-10 feet below the surrounding ridge. The par-4 13th borrows a trick from Pine Valley's 8th and presents two separate greens. The 18th, bending toward a lagoon-guarded green, is regularly named one of the best closing holes in Florida. Golf Digest named Black Best New Public Course in 2018 and ranks it #26 on America's 100 Greatest Public Courses (2025). Golfweek slots it at #31 on Top 100 You Can Play and #3 in Florida. Pair it with Blue and Red as a three-day Streamsong itinerary, Black is the wider-shouldered sibling, best played last after your eyes have adjusted to the scale.
