Scott Hoffmann designed The Classic at Madden's on Gull Lake in 1997 — a championship course on the sprawling family resort property in Brainerd, Minnesota. The course opened to immediate recognition, winning Golf Digest's Best New Public Upscale Golf Course in North America at its debut. Current rankings include #80 on Golf Digest's 2025-26 America's 100 Greatest Public Courses, #62 on the Top 100 Public list, #91 on Golfweek's Best Resort Courses, and 10th in Minnesota on Golf Digest's Best in State.
