A.W. Tillinghast designed his very first golf course at Shawnee Inn in 1911 โ making this a foundational property in the architect's career, before Winged Foot, Bethpage Black, and Baltusrol. Bill Diddle expanded the course to 27 holes (Red, Blue, White) in 1964. The course sits on an island in the Delaware River in the Pocono Mountains. Shawnee hosted the 1938 PGA Championship โ Paul Runyan beat Sam Snead 8 & 7 in the final, ironically defeating Shawnee's own touring professional. The Shawnee Open ran here from 1912 and was a recognized PGA Tour event from 1916 to 1937. The 1967 NCAA Championship was held here as well โ Hale Irwin won the individual title for the University of Colorado. Mid-tier resort daily-fee pricing in the $$ band. For Pocono trips, this is the historical pick โ Tillinghast's first design plus a major championship pedigree.
