The Black Forest at Wilderness Valley was Tom Doak's second design, opening in 1991, and the first course where his 'minimalist' philosophy really asserted itself. Resort founder David Smith hired a young Doak to route 18 holes across 400 acres of native Michigan evergreen and hardwood forest near Gaylord, with a brief that prioritized walking and native terrain over earthmoving theatrics. The routing cuts through the woods with tree-lined corridors that make each hole feel entirely self-contained. More than 100 bunkers scatter the property, and Doak famously made no two of them look alike, each one hand-shaped during construction. Greens have the classic hand-crafted look that would become a Doak signature at Pacific Dunes and Barnbougle Dunes: subtle rolls and multiple break points that reward local knowledge. Peak green fee runs around $75-105, absurd value for a Tom Doak signature design. Fits a Gaylord Golf Mecca trip as the 'minimalist Doak among RTJ Trail-style Michigan resort golf' round.
Black Forest at Wilderness Valley's peak-season green fee is around $95 per round. Off-peak rates vary by season. Call the pro shop for current shoulder pricing. Cart, range balls, and caddie fees are typically separate. Estimate the full Gaylord trip cost
