Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Roger Rulewich's 1981 Ram Rock is widely known as 'The Challenger', 6,884 yards par-71 of narrow fairways, dramatic elevation changes, 10 water hazards, and rugged native granite rock outcrops scattered strategically across the landing zones. It's the hardest of the three RTJ Sr. courses at Horseshoe Bay and a well-respected championship layout in its own right. The course has hosted the Texas State Open, multiple USGA qualifying events, and other professional tournaments over its 40+ year history. Bunkering is aggressive, greens are firm and fast, and the combination of elevation drops with forced water carries on the closing holes delivers as many bogey opportunities as any resort course in the state. Peak green fee runs $145-200 for resort guests, Apple Rock-priced, but with a meaningfully tougher personality. Fits an Austin trip as the test-card of the Horseshoe Bay RTJ Sr. trio: Slick Rock is approachable, Apple Rock is scenic, Ram Rock is The Challenger.
