Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed Slick Rock in 1973 as the first of three courses at Horseshoe Bay Resort on Lake LBJ. Jones himself called this part of Texas "among the best in the world" for variety of golf. Slick Rock embodies Jones's famous "hard par, easy bogey" philosophy, 71 sand traps, 12 water hazards, and multiple tees on every hole to give players different takes on the same terrain. The course underwent a six-month Jones-team renovation in 2016. Horseshoe Bay Resort was named to GOLF Magazine's inaugural Top 100 Resorts in North America ranking. Golf Digest's 2019 Editors' Choice Awards selected it as one of the Best Golf Resorts in the Southwest. Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards named it a Top Resort in Texas and the Southwest three years running.
