Fred Couples and Gene Bates designed Kelly Plantation in 1998 along Choctawhatchee Bay in Destin — 7,099 yards through coastal pine and live oak, with the bay in play on several holes. Couples himself called it 'an unbelievable golf course… my best yet' shortly after opening, which is the kind of designer endorsement you don't get on most resort builds. Golf Digest gives it 4½ stars and has named it among the 'Top 5% of Golf Courses in North America.'
