Robert Trent Jones Sr. opened the course bearing his name at Palmetto Dunes in 1969, one of the first championship-caliber public-access courses on Hilton Head. Roger Rulewich handled a major renovation in the 2000s, and the course is the only oceanfront layout at Palmetto Dunes, finishing with a famous 10th hole that plays directly to the Atlantic. Golfweek ranks the Robert Trent Jones Oceanfront Course among the Top 20 Courses You Can Play in South Carolina (2025). The South Carolina Golf Course Ratings Panel placed it at #20 on the state's Best Classic Courses. The renovation earned it South Carolina's Golf Course of the Year in 2003, and the course has previously held the same honor from the South Carolina chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association.
